Student Suspended Over Jesus T-Shirt

Guru Nanak
From Debate Champion Forum:

My brows brushed up when I read this news in a Metro News today, Friday, May 4, 2012. A grade 12 student in Nova Scotia was suspended for 5 days because his T-shirt carried the word "Life is wasted without Jesus."

This is a violation to one's belief and it's a human right to express one's opinion and what one's stand for. The School Board said, "The wording on the shirt is problematic because it is directed at the beliefs of others."Why is this so? That's a religious belief. In this case where is the freedom of religion? Freedom of religion in all countries is constitutionally protected. There are highly christian nations but other religion exist. Let's respect one's belief and opinion, please.

That's unfortunate to be suspended over a t-shirt, but lets look at it from another angle. What if the t-shirt stated, "Life is wasted without Allah." Or, what if you got on a plane with a t-shirt on stating, "I'm a terrorist?" Even though you're not, it would not be wise to wear that shirt. (And I am NOT in any way, shape, or form associated with terrorism, so please don't take my comment and run with it, just making a point) ..

Prayer has been removed from public schools in America, therefore the kid had to know the risk he was taking when he first put the t-shirt on. Imagine the "can of worms" that would be opened, and the subsequent disputes, if any religious t-shirt were allowed.

Please don't take offense to what I'm about to type, but type I must ..

Most Christians don't quite understand that many of their views and beliefs are offensive to other people, just like the opinions of a Muslim, Jehovah's Witness, Harry Chrisna, Buddhist, Scientologist, or any other religious conviction. The fact that one follows the teachings of Jesus Christ and Christianity, believe it or not, are no different than an individual who follows Guru Nanak and Sikhism (Guru Nanak: October 1469 - May 1539, Sikhism currently has 23 million followers).

Personally I don't subscribe to any religion, however, the 12th grader in Nova Scotia would have been suspended for those same 5 days if his t-shirt displayed, "Life is wasted without Allah, Muhammad, Buddha, or Jesus Christ." Probably would have been OK if his shirt read, "Life is wasted without Nanak," because no one knows who this guy was.
